Which bread is best?
I loaded up of a variety of whole wheat and sprouted breads which can be purchased locally. Each day this week I will be trying each type and sharing with you the ingredients list, my thoughts and my review of the particular bread!
Have you ever considered shopping for your bread in the freezer section?
Well many loaves of bread sold on your grocery store shelves contain several types of preservatives, chemical dough conditioners, added sugars, artificial flavorings or coloring and GMOs. These ingredients are unnecessary in the bread making process but are used purely to extend shelf life and make the bread soft and fluffy!
Remember, it only takes 4 ingredients to make bread – flour, yeast, water and salt, there’s really no need for all that other nonsense.
Even if your buying a 100% whole wheat bread, check out that ingredients list it may not be just as healthy as you think!
In the bag of store bought bread from thrifties pictures the ingredients list contains:
Canola oil or soy bean oil
Sodium Stearoyl-2 lactylate (dough conditioner)
Calcium propionate - Preservative linked to ADHD
Monoglycerides (dough conditioner)
Caramel colour - These ingredients are made from petroleum and are linked to several health issues like hyperactivity in children, allergies and asthma. Ingredients like Caramel colouring can fool you into thinking it is real food but most industrial caramel colouring is created by heating ammonia and it is considered carcinogen when created this way.
If you have ever made bread from scratch you know it will only last a couple of days on the counter, same should be true for any bread you purchase from the store unless it has nasty preservatives in it. If you check out the freezer section next time you are at the grocery store I encourage you to try a loaf of bread from there and see what you think!
