Day 14 - 30 Day Cleaning Challenge - Under the bed!!

Today's Challenge was:

  • Deep Clean bedroom (Organize Drawers, check under bed, tidy closet, dust blinds, mop)
  • One Load of Laundry

I didn't know if I was going to have time for this assignment today as it was a bigger job and we had a busy day!  But I got it done and well.... here is how it went!

The blinds were actually pretty clean since I hired a house cleaner about a month or more ago and that was #1 on my list for them to do!

And my Drawers, I reorganized last week so it was just a bit of dusting, under the bed and tidying the closet as well as doing the floors!

Under the bed was pretty funny!  I enlisted my husband to do this job and he found a huge selection of balls under our bed!

Plus he also located my long lost favourite lip balm!!!  So happy to have it back!

That made my day!

Now for the yucky finds under the bed.... dust, hair and kleenex!  Our dog loves to go into the bathroom garbage, pull out the kleenex and proceed to eat it under our bed!  Frustrating as hell cause I'll come home to a trail of kleenex from the bathroom to the bedroom!

Tomorrow's Assignment is:

  • Surface Clean living room and kitchen
  • One load of laundry

Now that will be an easy one to complete.... besides the toy mess!

Day 12 and 13 - 30 days of cleaning challenge! Closets and junk room!

In between making dinner and having family time at the pool today I cleaned the hall closet, got rid of a few jackets we don't wear anymore and put a few things that belonged in there back!

Good thing it was a rainy afternoon today otherwise I may not have done my cleaning jobs!  Is it me or is it more difficult for everyone to hunker down and get stuff done on the weekends?

Gord is home and I just want to go out and do fun stuff with him and the kids!  I find it harder to eat healthy, and fit my workouts in when he is off too!

This morning I did my laundry, had a family breakfast and then we hit to pool with the boys!  Asher is starting to get way more comfortable in the pool and we are seeing a huge improvement in him!  So proud!  Today was Fraser's first trip to the pool and he was on the cusp of needing a nap so he didn't last as long as i'd hoped but had fun while he was in there!
Someone photo bombed me when I tried to
take a photo of the upper part of the closet...
you can still see it right?

Here are the after photos:
Little monkey found it quite funny when he and Daddy photo bombed me!  At least he is cute!!

After a few minutes of rearranging and getting rid of stuff!
Floor space!!
Now today's assignment was to Surface clean the Multi purpose room... or any random room in your home!  For us this room is our junk collector!  It's our laundry room, stamping space, freezer area, storage room, growing room for my tomato seedlings.... and junk room!  It collects everything, but luckily it just needed a little pick me up!  So I took about 10 minutes just before the boys went to bed and I tidied it up!

Here are the before photos:

My growing area for my precious tomato seedlings
The main junk collection spot!
Note Shakeology box filled with supplies
for an event I attended last month!
Just a tidy up, close the drawer,
organized the papers on the top of the file cabinet
and put away the potty stool!

After photos:
ahhhhh clean surface.... available for refilling with junk!

Nice and tidy!

Tomorrow's assignment is:
  • Deep Clean bedrooms (Organize Drawers, check under bed, tidy closet, dust, blinds, mop)
  • One load of Laundry
Hopefully I can get this assignment done tomorrow on time.... might have to enlist my little helper~

Week Two - 10 Weeks of Real food mini Pledges

This Weeks Mini Pledge is all about 100% Whole grain – All grains consumed must be 100% whole-grain this week.

Will you take the pledge?

Whole grains can be one of the most confusing and hard-to-find food products in the supermarket. From misleading buzz words like “multi-grain” and “wheat” to health-claims on the front of food packages that aren’t backed up by the ingredient list, it sure is treacherous out there.

For the most part all grains (wheat, corn, barley, rice, etc.) consist of 3 parts: the bran, germ and endosperm. The bran and especially the germ are where you’ll find most of the grain’s nutritional value. When a grain is highly refined into a product like white flour or white rice both of the most nutritional parts are removed leaving you with only the endosperm. The endosperm is basically a “big packet of starch and protein” that is high in calories and low in nutrients (similar to sugar).

In order to make up for the lost nutrients they have stripped away from the grain, refined grains are often "enriched" or "fortified" with vitamins thought to be lost. Wouldn't you rather just eat them in the first place?

Did you know that one of the main reasons products like white flour were manufactured is because when the key nutrients are stripped away, the flour ends up having a much longer shelf life and is less interesting to bugs since they are looking for nutrients and don't have much interest in refined grains.....

So here is where to start:

** If the front of a food package says it contains “whole-grains” or “whole-wheat” don’t be fooled…always verify by reading the ingredient label to see what a product is really made of. Packages often advertise that a product contains whole-grains even if it is only 20% whole-grain.

**If a product is labeled as “multi-grain” it by no means guarantees those grains are whole-grains. It could be a bunch of different refined grains mixed together. Again, you must read the ingredient list to know for sure what’s in a food product.

**If the ingredient list on a product contains any portion of “wheat” or “rice” then it is not 100% whole-grain. White flour is still technically made from the wheat plant (a refined version) so it is often labeled as “wheat.” It must say something like “whole-wheat” or “brown rice” to be a whole grain ingredient.

**Whether you are shopping at a supermarket or eating at a restaurant, most food products that are labeled as whole-grain are rarely 100% whole-grain. They often contain some percentage of refined grains as well.

**Since it is so hard to find 100% whole-grain foods it is best to avoid grains all together when you are out to eat at a restaurant (unless you can see the ingredient list yourself). Servers and other restaurant employees are often misinformed and will tell you the bread is “100% whole grain” when it is not.

**Finding good 100% whole-wheat sandwich bread is one of the biggest whole-grain challenges of them all. Some stores bring in freshly made bread products from a local bakery. Other stores have a few decent options in their freezer section. Your best bet is to find a local bakery that makes their dough fresh daily (unlike grocery store bakeries that typically bake pre-mixed dough) or make it yourself!

I did a blog series a few months ago on 5 Breads that passed my test at the grocery store and how they tasted, check it out here if you are looking for a place to start this week!

Healthy Team Lunch and Cleaning Assignment for Day 11

Today Asher's team has a Lacrosse game and it's my week to do the after game lunch!

We decided to make sandwiches! So we hit up the local butcher to get their in house no nitrate or preservative deli meat, we picked ham and turkey.

We then picked up 4 loaves of whole wheat bread, blueberries, raspberries, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, juice boxes, and veggie chips!

Last night after the boys were in bed Gord and I made veggie, ham, turkey and egg sandwiches. We baked a batch of cookies, made fruit skewers, cut up veggies and put them all into easy to serve containers.

We got a lot done and I'm happy with our healthy lunch for all the kids on the team plus siblings and parents too!

The kids loved the Fruit skewers, and we had actually completely forgot to put them out and there were only 4 kids left hanging around when we did.... and guess what?  They are all gone!

I know some of the kids may have chosen not to have a sandwich because we used whole wheat bread, but I don't believe in over processed white bread so I decided that I wasn't going to provide that option.  Most of the kids were quite happy with the Sandwiches and I didn't hear any complaints!

Of course we had WAY too much food, and we will be eating sandwiches for dinner I guess but it was fun and you really see the kids bonding when you get them all together after the game!  So much fun!

We set everything up on the back of the tailgate and Fraser was having a grand old time trying to steal all the food he could reach!  At one point he actually grabbed a cookie and was about to take a big bite!  He did enjoy a bit of bread from one of the sandwiches and he also got a hold of a half a ham sandwich too so we let him gnaw on it a bit ;)

Fun day!

Yesterday was bathroom cleaning day and there wasn't much to blog about other than the usual bathroom stuff but today's assignment is: Clean closets ( hang up clothes, organize mittens, jackets, hats)!

I'll likely do some gardening this afternoon, have some family time, I have a call with one of my coaches scheduled and then do the closets later today so look for my post tomorrow! I've got some closets in serious need of organizing!!

Day 9 and 10 - 30 day cleaning challenge

I'm a day behind posting this as I had a great meeting with one of my coaches last night and enjoyed the day in the sun with my boys yesterday! So although I completed my assignment in the morning, I didn't do the blog post!

But! Here I am!!

Yesterday's assignment was:

Surface clean a bedroom
One load of laundry

I chose Asher's room to clean cause it just needed a tidy.

Check it out:
Clothes needing put away couple toys and items out of place.
Too much stuff on the top of that dresser!
Crazy closet!  Probably can't even close the doors
without kicking a few things in first!

After

So much better!
I think the doors might close now without any force!
My little helpers!

Today's assigned is:

Deep clean living room (baseboards, dust, wipe tables)
One load of laundry

Asher helped me dust and do the baseboards using the dust mit!

Look at that good kid!
yum.... yuck!  This was the heater behind the toy trunk....
we pulled it out and cleaned under and behind it!
I hardly had to do much for this assignment!
Love my helper boy!
This was a ring on the top of the fireplace glass top!
Got it off easy with my glass cleaning cloth from Norwex!
Seriously love that cloth!
For this whole assignment today I used norwex, and love that I didn't waste any paper towel!  I'm not trying to sell any norwex here... just excited :)

Tomorrow's assignment is:

  • Clean Bathrooms!!!!!
  • One load of laundry
You might wonder why i'm so excited about cleaning the bathrooms.... it's because I need to clean the upstairs bathroom BAD!  That smell of pee has started to stink up my bathroom (darn boys) and I was tempted last night to just tear it apart and clean... I did do the bowl cause it was getting dingy but I knew this assignment must be coming up soon so I waited! Glad I did!!!  Tomorrow I will clean that stinky bathroom!!!

I'm off to make my breakfast!

Today's assignment was much needed!  I usually do the floors every couple days around here because kids just make so many crumbs and the dog sheds too!

I also caught up on yesterday's assignment of cleaning the interior windows and I also cleaned the sills and part where it slides too!  Pretty yucky!!

Yuck look at all that dirt and dog hair

Much better!

Tomorrow's assignment is:

  • Surface clean bedroom (dust, sweep, pick up and put away stray items)
  • One load of laundry
This one should be easy!

Now I had better get my workout in before this babe wakes up!!

10 weeks of Real Food Mini Pledges - Week one: Eat a minimum of two different fruits or Vegetables at each meal

Here we go! Week 1 started today!  The group participants are busy introducing them selves and getting started on the pledge!
Here is this weeks pledge:
Week 1: April 28 - May 4 -- Eat a minimum of two different fruits or vegetables (preferably organic) with every breakfast, lunch, and dinner meal.
Even for our family eating two fruits or vegetables at every meal is a challenge. We usually eat at least one serving per meal but two is more of a stretch. At dinner time I try to get two on the plate, but the other meals are lacking over here! So I'm excited to take part in this challenge along side everyone and see how we all do!
There are many people who don't eat any vegetables at dinner time, never mind the other meals. I get it, easy to have a BBQ burger with fries right. But try adding a salad instead or even a veggie tray to the mix.
The reason I say try for organic produce is because there are more nutrients in organic, because the soil has more nutrients in it, additionally you won't be adding the extra chemical pesticides and fertilizers that used on conventional produce. Plus it just tastes better!
The whole point of this challenge is for you to displace something else that you would normally eat (like chips or fries or even crackers) with some colorful produce. So for those that are worried about the extra expense of organic fruits and vegetables try buying more produce INSTEAD of something else that you would normally buy. And also consider buying frozen organic produce, which is a wonderful alternative to fresh and usually much cheaper (although it is unfortunately not always as tasty). Please be aware though that there are two things that do not count for this particular challenge: dried fruit (like raisins) and fruit juice – sorry about that!
This challenge is great for involving the whole family especially the kids! If you tell them that we are all supposed to eat two fruits or veggies at each meal they will probably remind you and and hold you accountable too!  I know Asher would!
If you want to participate in our Facebook group to pledge that you too will eat a minimum of two fruits or vegetables at every meal this week, request your spot by clicking the link below!

Each week will be a new pledge, and each week the participants will gain more knowledge about real food and eating locally!  I'm so excited for this challenge and I hope you are too!
