Melting Snowman Kids Activity

Melting Snowman Kids Activity

Some nights you just gotta keep your kid up a little past bedtime to fit in a fun activity!

I made the snowman snow for this Melting snowman activity yesterday afternoon and discovered I didn't have quite enough baking soda to make the snow the right consistency.  But overnight it dried up a little and we were able to make our snowmen today!

Here is the little Snowman I made.

BUT a last minute pace rehearsal and dinner and grocery shopping took up most of our after school time today, and Asher really really really wanted to Build a Snowman!  SO while I put groceries away he built his snowman next to mine and once we were all ready to go we melted those snowmen together!  Daddy and Fraser even got in on the action!

Asher melted him!

Now they are both totally melted!
Last year we did this activity with Asher and it was a big hit!  This year it was fun to see Asher build his own snowman and add his accessories too!

Way too much fun melting his snowmen!

Fraser just loved the little snowman I built and wanted so badly to touch him!  He is also super excited about the Christmas Lights on the house across the street!  Every time we go outside he says "lights lights"!

So cute!  I have a feeling this Christmas is going to be super special!  PLUS the gate for around our Christmas tree arrived tonight by way of our friend Kevin!  I just know Fraser is going to be trouble around that tree so we are borrowing a large gate to keep him away from the ornaments. I think we will try him out for a day or two and see how he does, but currently us saying NO is either ignored or met with tears!

Hopefully he will be good around the tree and we won't need a big gate!  But I'm glad to have it just in case.

To make your own Melting Snowman, you will need:

Baking Soda
Dish Soap
Salt
Vinegar
Waterproof accessories (Hat, nose, arms buttons)

Don't forget to dump the vinegar on tip of
them after you have squirted them for a while!

Ingredients for the Dough (should make 4 small snowmen)

2 Cups Baking Soda
2 Tablespoons salt
1 tsp dish soap
8 Table spoons water

Directions for the Dough

  • In a bowl or other container, measure out two cups of baking soda and add 2 Tablespoons of salt.  Mix throughly (get your little one to help with this!).
  • Add 1 tsp soap and mix it into the dough well.  The dough should look crumbly.
  • Next add 8 Tablespoons of water.  If your dough will form a ball, you're all set.  If it's still too dry and crumbly add water 1 Tablespoon at a time until you have a dough that molds into a ball.
  • It will not feel like playdough - it's more smooshy and crumbly than that.  But it should form into and hold a ball.
Have a great time building and melting your snowman!
